The martyr San Candido, Fucecchio

In a shrine in the Collegiate Church of Fucecchio you can find the skeleton of San Candido. According to the writings of St. Eucherio, the bishop of Lyon (434), Candido was a commander of the Theban Legion, made up of Christians coming from Egypt, who opposed the orders of their superiors to persecute other Christians. Candido, together with other officers of the General Staff and 6600 soldiers, is said to have been made a martyr in the Swiss city of Saint Maurice-en-Valais, which was then called Agaunum. The saint is celebrated in Fuecchio on October 3.
