In honour of the great sculptor Arnolfo di Cambio, who was born in Colle val d'Elsa, the winning entries in a presepe competition are displayed under the loggias of the piazza that bears his name. In 1291, in fact, it was Arnolfo di Cambio whom Pope Nicholas IV (1288-92), wanting to pay homage to the presepe (nativity scene) in Greccio, commissioned to sculpt the first animated one. This unique work is kept inside the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Roma.
