Luisa of Marillac and Vincenzo de’ Paoli founded the innovative non “religious” community of the Daughters of Carità. San Vincenzo did not want them to be secluded nor wear a habit or reside in a chapel. They had to live simply. He bought them a similar house to that of the poor. San Vincenzo was not afraid to single out the brilliance, the ability and the strength of the woman, who were at that time conditioned to a choice only between married life or the life of a nun He was not afraid to involve robust girls from the countryside, because they were “the poor” who understood, helped, supported and served other poor people. He was not afraid to send these inexperienced women into the most risky of places: battlefields, jails, infamous streets, hospitals. The motto was and remains: “the Charity of Crucified Christ motivates us”.
