The relics of Santa Zita are located in the right-hand chapel of the San Frediano Basilica in Lucca. In addition to the religious and devotional value, the saint’s body is one of the few medieval mummies still perfectly intact, to the extent that it has been explored at an international level on several occasions.
Santa Zita, who was born in Monsagrati in 1218 and died in Lucca in 1278, is the religious figure most loved by locals. On April 27 every year the feast day is celebrated in the San Frediano Basilica, preceded by a week of showing the urn containing the saint’s body in the centre of the basilica’s nave.
