The Pieve di Santa Maria in Chianni is one of the leading examples of Late-Romanesque architecture in Tuscany. It’s situated a short distance from the historic centre of Gambassi Terme. Despite the passing of the centuries and the restoration work that has taken place over time, the church still maintains a similar appearance to the facade of Volterra Cathedral. Remembered by Sigeric, Archbishop of Canterbury, in the late tenth century, as the twentieth section of his long journey along the Via Francigena, the church’s yellow sandstone facade stands in contrast with the surrounding scenery.
