The image of the Madonna del Soccorso is venerated in the side chapel of the church of San Giacomo, Altopascio. Her cult goes back to 25 January 1518, the day on which this portrait of the Madonna breast-feeding the Child was discovered by a bricklayer, who had been charged with demolishing the wall, under a layer of plaster. His hand was paralysed, and he regained the use of it only after asking for the intercession of the Virgin. The festival is celebrated every year on 25 January.
