The wooden statue of the Madonna del Popolo has always remained in the same place, once the location of the oratory that bore her name, now the site of the Duomo di Pontremoli. According to tradition this sacred image was brought to the city by the Knights of Malta, probably from the East. This Madonna is dark-skinned and enthroned, with the Child standing on her knee: she is dressed in drapery of a seventeenth-century style. The most venerated object in all the city of Pontremoli, she resides in a niche behind the main altar.
