In the chapel to the right of the transept of the Duomo of Pietrasanta, images of Madonna del Sole, the patron saint of the city, are preserved. The small panel shows the theme of the Madonna of Humility with the blessing child. At the sides are St. John the Evangelist and St. John the Baptist while behind the Virgin, there is a banner with the coats of arms of the city of Pietrasanta on it. The widespread veneration of the Madonna comes from the benevolence of the Virgin at the time of the great rains of 1617 which threatened the city. Following offerings and processions to the Madonna the rains subsided. Still today, the image is the object of worship and devotion and is found throughout the year covered by a bronze screen. Only on September 8 of each year is the image visible, on the occasion of the Solemnity of the Nativity of Mary.
