The Archangel Michael, to whom is dedicated one of the most important churches in the historic centre of Lucca, enjoys a great deal of veneration in the whole Lucchese province. The 29 September, the day devoted to the Archangels, is a festival which involves numerous celebrations in the Basilica di San Michele in Foro, culminating in an afternoon Mass presided over by the Archbishop. The final fair of the Settembre Lucchese takes place on the same day. On the Saturday prior to the festival, the Associazione Musicale Lucchese puts on a large orchestral concert, considered one of the city's most hotly anticipated musical events.
