The traditional festival of San Giuseppe takes place in Via Duprè, in the district called Contrada dell'Onda, where once upon a time many of Siena's carpenters kept their shops. Along the street, past the ceramics and terracotta of the Sienese artisans, you find roving stalls selling toys and sweets. The festival is identified by its so-called 'carrettini di San Giuseppe', small plywood platforms which move on wheels made of pinecones, bearing cut-outs of horses with the colours of Siena's contradas. Little fried rice balls known as the 'Frittelle di San Giuseppe' are sold in the days leading up to March 19, in Piazza di Campo and around the church of San Giuseppe.
