The cult of San Cataldo is documented in the Lucchese hamlet of Santa Maria as far back as the Middle Ages: even in the fourteenth century there existed a confraternity dedicated to the saint and to the Nativity of Mary. Every year San Cataldo is solemnly celebrated on his day in the liturgical calendar, which is preceded by a triduum of preparations, eucharistic services, and a long procession at Vespers. It is without doubt the most deep-rooted festival in the part of the Lucchesia north of the river Serchio.
