The image of the Madonna della Pietà gives its name to the altar in which it is kept at the Abbey of San Pietro. The 8 September, the celebration of the Birth of Mary, is dedicated to this, the most venerated icon in Camaiore; and every year this day, which sees religious rituals and the visits of believers, is preceded by eight days of preparations.
