The public competition for the Festa dei Tabernacoli is organised by the Magistrato delle Contrade and the Comitato Amici del Palio, with the support of the Municipality of Siena and the Amministrazione Provinciale. The competition takes place every year on 8 September, to mark the celebration of the Nativity of Mary. The display, apart from perpetuating a tradition which is simply part of life in the contrade (districts), is intended to make people see the strong connection between these civic tabernacles and popular sentiment, thereby simultaneously playing an educational role for the young generations in the contrade.
