A wooden crucifix is housed by the main altar in the San Niccolò Church, to which a solemn homage is paid every year on September 14 for the Festival of Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Legend has it that the crucifix was brought to Pontremoli by a pilgrim welcomed by a pious woman called Liberata. When the wayfarer left, the crucifix was found wrapped in a sack. Every 25 years, adoration is offered to the crucifix in the cathedral and it is paraded around the town.
