Modern hospitality in an area which had its old guest house in Castiglioncello, along the Strada Romea, under the castle of Castiglion Alto, which is home to a precious and striking statue from the 13th century of an enthroned, smiling Madonna and Child.
Properly called the Black Madonna of Sapia, this statue is more commonly known as the Madonna of Castiglioni. Sapia is recorded by Dante in Purgatorio Canto XIII, lines 109-11: 'Despite being called Sapia, I was not / sapient, and I took greater pleasure / in others' woes than in my own good fortune'.
